O Head Coach do Detroit Lions, Dan Campbell, considerou assumir as chamadas ofensivas quando o ex-Coordenador Ofensivo Ben Johnson deixou o time para assumir o cargo de Head Coach do Chicago Bears na última offseason.
Campbell disse nesta semana que teve "um milhão de ideias" sobre como fazer o ataque dos Lions jogar de maneira mais consistente e uma delas foi assumir o papel de chamar as jogadas.
"Foi apenas: 'Vamos tentar algo um pouco diferente'", disse Campbell após a vitória dos Lions por 44 a 22 contra o Washington Commanders no domingo, em um jogo no qual Detroit acumulou 546 jardas totais de ataque. "Eu sei o que quero fazer e como quero fazer. Dito isso, foi um esforço colaborativo. Eu estava recebendo sugestões do (Coordenador Ofensivo) John Morton o tempo todo."
Campbell afirmou que a decisão foi resultado de um esforço conjunto entre ele, Morton e os outros treinadores ofensivos, tanto durante a semana de preparação quanto no jogo em si. Ele apenas sentiu que assumir as chamadas poderia mudar o ritmo e dar um novo impulso ao time e deu certo.
Detroit correu para 226 jardas e teve uma média de 6,8 jardas por tentativa, liderado por Jahmyr Gibbs, que somou 142 jardas terrestres e dois touchdowns corridos. O Quarterback Jared Goff lançou três touchdowns, teve um rating de 135,9 e não sofreu nenhum sack durante toda a partida. Os titulares do ataque pontuaram em todas as sete posses de bola, e os Lions se tornaram apenas o sexto time visitante na história da NFL a produzir pelo menos 320 jardas e três touchdowns aéreos, junto com pelo menos 225 jardas terrestres e dois touchdowns corridos.
"Quisemos ver se talvez um chamador de jogadas diferente poderia nos dar um pouco mais de ritmo", disse Campbell. "É só isso. Honestamente, nada além disso. Fizemos uma mudança, e ela funcionou hoje."
Campbell contou que decidiu fazer a mudança após a derrota para o Minnesota Vikings na semana anterior. Ele teve uma conversa franca com Morton, que colocou o time em primeiro lugar, e juntos montaram um excelente plano para enfrentar Washington. Campbell ressaltou que Morton é particularmente essencial para o jogo aéreo de Detroit.
"Sim, eu gosto de chamar as jogadas", disse Campbell. "Mas também sei que isso vai exigir muito de mim. É como qualquer outra coisa: quando você faz, se ajusta e começa a entender o que precisa fazer e como fazer para ser mais eficiente. No fim das contas, trata-se do que é melhor para o time."

Depois de ceder cinco sacks, 11 QB Hits e 26 pressões totais na derrota para Minnesota, a linha ofensiva de Detroit teve uma atuação de recuperação enorme contra Washington no domingo.
Detroit não permitiu nenhum sack contra os Commanders, e Goff foi atingido apenas cinco vezes em todo o jogo. A linha ofensiva também abriu caminho para 226 jardas terrestres e uma média de 6,8 jardas por corrida e Washington não conseguiu um único tackle para perda de jardas durante a partida.
"Eles foram realmente excelentes", disse Goff após o jogo sobre a atuação da linha ofensiva. "Acho que tudo começou cedo. Foi possível sentir como eles estavam dominando os adversários no jogo corrido, e isso abre espaço para todo o resto. Esses caras têm muito orgulho e queriam jogar em alto nível e fizeram isso hoje."
GRANDE DIA PARA GIBBS
Gibbs teve uma atuação memorável no domingo, tornando-se apenas o segundo jogador na história da franquia a registrar um jogo com mais de 140 jardas corridas, dois touchdowns terrestres, mais de 30 jardas recebidas e um touchdown de recepção.
Depois de uma partida na semana anterior em que teve apenas 25 jardas corridas (média de 2,8) na derrota para Minnesota, Goff disse que, durante o planejamento de jogo, eles acreditavam que poderiam colocar Gibbs em confrontos favoráveis.
"Achei que ele fez um ótimo trabalho saindo do backfield como recebedor", disse Goff sobre Gibbs. "E, obviamente, no jogo terrestre, ele foi incrível também. Ele é uma arma única para nós, especialmente se pudermos usá-lo da maneira como usamos hoje à noite."
