O Detroit Lions anunciou Drew Petzing como seu novo Coordenador Ofensivo.

1. Importância do jogo terrestre
Petzing, de 38 anos, foi o Coordenador Ofensivo do Arizona Cardinals sob o ex-head coach Jonathan Gannon nas últimas três temporadas. Há elementos esquemáticos em seu ataque que fazem dele um bom encaixe em Detroit, principalmente seu compromisso em ter um jogo terrestre sólido.
Em 2024, os Cardinals correram para 2.451 jardas e 18 touchdowns, com uma média de 5,3 jardas por tentativa. O total de jardas terrestres foi o terceiro maior da história da franquia Cardinals e o mais alto desde 1979. A média de 5,3 jardas por tentativa foi a maior da história da equipe e a 16ª melhor média da história da NFL. O Arizona foi uma das apenas duas equipes da NFL a ter média superior a 5,0 jardas por corrida tanto em 2023 quanto em 2024.
O Arizona terminou 2024 em sétimo lugar em jardas terrestres, 11º em ataque total e 12º em pontos marcados. Esses números não se mantiveram em 2025, o que não é muito surpreendente considerando que perderam o Quarterback Kyler Murray, o Running Back James Conner e o Wide Receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. por lesão durante a maior parte da temporada.

2. Experiência na NFC Norte
Petzing trabalhou no Minnesota Vikings entre 2014 a 2019, onde evoluiu de assistente ofensivo até técnico de Wide Receivers. Durante sua passagem por Minnesota, Petzing ajudou os Vikings a conquistarem dois títulos da divisão NFC Norte (2015 e 2017) e também a se classificarem para os playoffs como Wild Card em 2019.

Após registrar apenas 235 jardas recebidas em sua primeira temporada antes da chegada de Petzing, o Tight End Trey McBride teve média de 106 recepções, 1.070 jardas e cinco touchdowns nas últimas três temporadas. Ele alcançou marcas recordes na carreira na última temporada, com 126 recepções para 1.239 jardas e 11 touchdowns.
O Tight End Pro Bowl dos Lions, Sam LaPorta, ficou limitado a apenas nove jogos nesta temporada por conta de uma lesão nas costas, mas somou 146 recepções para 1.615 jardas e 17 touchdowns em suas duas primeiras temporadas combinadas. Os ataques de Petzing no Arizona foram, em sua maioria, com o Quarterback alinhado sob o center, com forte uso de play action envolvendo Running Backs e Tight Ends.

4. Desenvolvimento dos Wide Receivers
Quando Petzing foi o técnico de Wide Receivers dos Vikings em 2019, Stefon Diggs estabeleceu um recorde pessoal à época com 1.130 jardas recebidas, sua segunda temporada consecutiva acima de 1.000 jardas. Ele terminou em quarto lugar na liga naquela temporada, com média de 17,9 jardas por recepção em 63 passes recebidos.
Em 2017, como assistente de Wide Receivers, Petzing ajudou Adam Thielen a conquistar honras de Pro Bowl e All-Pro, com 91 recepções para 1.276 jardas e quatro touchdowns.
Os Lions foram a única equipe da NFL nesta temporada a ter dois recebedores, Amon-Ra St. Brown e Jameson Williams, terminando no top 10 em jardas recebidas. Isaac TeSlaa também mostrou potencial, anotando seis touchdowns como calouro. É um grupo que deve começar com tudo sob o comando de Petzing.
5. Conexão com os Lions
Petzing foi assistente em Boston College entre 2010 e 2011, onde trabalhou com o ex-Coordenador Ofensivo dos Lions e atual head coach do Chicago Bears, Ben Johnson.
