Detroit Lions Academy

Detroit Lions Academy (DLA) is a Detroit Public Schools Community District alternative middle school located on the east side of Detroit that opened in 2001, with the Lions as a founding partner. DLA provides over-age students the opportunity to learn and achieve in a structured and safe environment which addresses their individual learning and personal needs to get them back on grade-level. The Lions' financial support helps DLA address student barriers to education by meeting basic needs and providing supplies and resources. A steady presence of Lions players, cheerleaders, Legends and Detroit Lions staff provides mentorship and leadership development opportunities to help students succeed beyond the classroom.

Robot Garage

Robot Garage: DLA students spent an afternoon in January 2020 with facilitators from Robot Garage building robots using STEM skills and battling it out in a tournament for bragging rights

Movie Field Trip

Movie Field Trip: In celebration of Black History Month, the Detroit Lions invited all Detroit Lions Academy students to a private viewing of Harriet in March of 2020. Students got the complete movie theater experience including pizza provided by Lions WR Jamal Agnew

Meal Donations

Meal Donations: To supplement school-provided lunches, the Detroit Lions provided special meals to DLA students that were learning in-person for portions of this school year.

The Detroit Police Athletic League

The Detroit Police Athletic League (PAL) positively influences the lives of thousands of children each year. With roots dating back to 1969, PAL works to create safe and supportive places for kids to play. With year-round programs, Detroit PAL helps its athletes learn the skills needed to succeed both on and off the playing field. In 2019-2020 the Detroit Lions provided support for the Detroit PAL Youth Football League through grant funding used for site monitors, sports officials and helmet refurbishing.

Virtual Parent & Athlete Panel Discussion

Virtual Parent & Athlete Panel Discussion: In November of 2020, the Detroit Lions partnered with PAL to create a unique virtual event for PAL athletes, their parents, and coaches. Lions Legends engaged in discussion with parents around how to support their young athletes while Lions players spoke with athletes on perseverance and how to make the most of their years playing football.
