Sean Ryan joins the Lions as the quarterbacks coach in 2019 after spending three seasons (2016-18) with the Houston Texans before coming to Detroit. His coaching experience on the offensive side of the football spans more than 20 years on both the collegiate and professional levels. During his time in Houston, Ryan worked with QB Deshaun Watson, helping him put together a promising rookie campaign despite playing in just seven games due to a season-ending injury. As a rookie, Watson set an NFL record for passing touchdowns (19) through a player’s first seven career games. After Watson went down due to injury, Ryan worked with QB Tom Savage, who went on to throw for 300 yards for the first time in his career in Week 13 at Tennessee (12/3/17). Savage became the eighth quarterback in Texans history to do so.
