Biography

Young wide receiver who adds size, speed and accurate route-running capabilities to the Lions’ already lethal receiving corps. Payton tallied 1,443 receiving yards and five touchdowns during his college career at North Carolina State.

COLLEGE

2013: As the Wolf Pack’s starting receiver he earned a spot in the ‘X’ slot. Ended his senior season with 500 yards, 24 catches and three touchdowns.

  • Served on the team’s leadership council.

2012: As a junior he tallied 798 receiving yards, which ranks 14th on the school’s all-time single-season list.

  • Midseason he was placed on the `watch' list for the Biletnikoff Award.

2011: Tallied 107 yards and seven receptions as a sophomore.

  • Had a 32-yard reception, the longest of his career, at Boston College (11/12).

2010: Played 97 snaps, after suffering a finger injury during the pre-season.

2009: Redshirted.

PERSONAL
Attended T.L. Hanna (S.C.) High School where he played football and ran track. Payton played quarterback during his senior year under head coach Kenya Fouch. During his senior year as a QB he completed 15-for-33 passes, accumulating 284 yards and three TDs. He excelled in his running game by rushing 43 times for 288 yards and caught 23 passes for 359 yards and recorded three TDs.

  • Selected to the 2008 HSSR Class AAAA All-State Offensive Team.
  • Selected and participated in the 2008 SCADA North-South All-Star game.
  • Named T.L. Hanna High School’s Best Receiver in 2007.
  • Majored in communications at NC State.
