Van Noy’s ball-hawk instincts and unparalleled ability to force turnovers make him a hybrid threat in Lions Defensive Coordinator Teryl Austin’s defense in 2014. The Lions’ second-round selection (40th overall) in the 2014 NFL Draft, Van Noy is expected to contribute immediately in the Detroit defense.

COLLEGE
Ended his four-year collegiate career at Brigham Young with 226 tackles (153 solo), 26 sacks (192 yards), 11 forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and three blocked kicks in 52 career games (36 starts). Also recorded seven interceptions (122 yards), returning two of them for touchdowns, as well as 17 pass defenses.

  • His versatility on the Cougars’ defense landed him a spot in the BYU record books as he tied Jim Herrmann (1981, 83-84) for fourth on the school career list with 26 sacks. His 62 tackles for loss also shattered the previous BYU all-time mark of 44 by Jan Jorgensen.

2013: Named a semifinalist for both the Bednarik Award and Butkus Award, as he finished second in voting for National Defensive Player of the Year honors by CBS Sports. An All-American selection by Yahoo Sports, Phil Steele, Sports Illustrated, NFL.com and CBS Sports, Van Noy started all 13 games as a senior at weak-side linebacker. He ranked 21st in the nation with a team-high 17.5 tackles for loss, the sixth-highest total in school history, and finished the season with 70 tackles (42 solo), four sacks (29 yards), two interceptions (17 yards), one of which he returned for a touchdown, seven pass defenses and one fumble recovery.

  • Opened the season with 2.5 tackles for loss vs. Virginia.
  • Recorded his first sack of the season vs. Texas and ended the game with eight tackles.
  • Returned an interception 17 yards for a score vs. Utah State.
  • Logged a season-high three sacks among his six tackles (five solo) vs. Georgia Tech.

2012: Earned an Associated Press Third Team All-American selection after starting all 13 games as a junior and finishing the season with 53 tackles (37 solo), 13 sacks (40 yards), two interceptions (26 yards), one touchdown, seven pass defenses and six forced fumbles. His 13 sacks ranked fifth nationally. Also recorded two blocked kicks and recovered a fumble in the end zone for a score.

  • Began his junior season with a pair of sacks vs. Washington State, one of which caused a fumble.
  • Recorded a career-high three sacks and added five tackles at New Mexico State.
  • Returned an interception 17 yards for a touchdown, and also recovered a fumble in the end zone for another score in the Poinsettia Bowl vs. San Diego State.

2011: Started eight of the 13 games he played in at weak-side linebacker as a sophomore, delivering 68 tackles (60 solo), seven sacks, three interceptions (79 yards), three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one touchdown.

2010: Played in all 13 games as a freshman, and started two games at weak-side linebacker vs. San Diego State and Texas Christian. Ended the year with 35 tackles (24 solo), two sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

PERSONAL
Attended McQueen (Reno, Nev.) High School, where he played on both sides of the ball and earned first team all-state honors at outside linebacker and H-back. Received a four-star grade from Rivals.com and was rated as the 24th-best athlete in the nation, also placing him at fourth on the Nevada Top 15 list. Ranked as the 11th-best weak-side linebacker in the country, according to Scout.com

  • As a senior, hauled in 35 passes for 731 yards and 18 touchdowns, along with 121 yards on 10 carries. Defensively, finished the season with 79 tackles (55 solo), six forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, 14 sacks and one interception for a score.
    • Led his team to a perfect 14-0 record and a Class 4A state championship that season.
  • Earned all-conference honors in track, competing in the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relays.
  • Majored in communications with a minor in history at BYU.
