Hard-hitting safety who finished his career at William & Mary with 257 tackles (158 solo), five interceptions (21 yards), one touchdown, 21 pass defenses, five forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

2013: Established himself as one of the nation’s top defensive players as he was a finalist for the Buchanan Award. Earned First Team All-American honors from the Associated Press, The Sports Network and Phil Steel. Was a team captain and First Team All-CAA selection.

  • Finished the season with 113 tackles, six pass breakups, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery, which he returned 51 yards for a touchdown.
  • Ranked third in the conference with 9.1 tackles per game, which ranked first among defensive backs.
  • Recorded double-digit tackle totals in six games, and was honored as the CAA Defensive Player of the Week following his performance against Delaware.
  • Voted by his teammates as the Williams & Mary Defensive Player of the Year.

2012: Had a breakout junior season, earning third team all-conference honors and ranking fifth in the CAA with 8.3 tackles per game. Started all 11 games and ended the season with 91 tackles, three interceptions, two forced fumbles and four pass defenses.

  • Opened the season with five tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss, and a forced fumble at Maryland.
  • Picked off passes in games vs. Richmond, James Madison and Georgia State.
  • Tallied a career-high 15 tackles at Towson.

2011: Appeared in all 11 games and started the final six to close out the season with 47 tackles, one interception, six pass breakups and one forced fumble.

  • Had his best performance of the season against sixth-ranked New Hampshire with an interception and five solo tackles in the game.

2010: Competed in 11 games as a reserve in the Tribe defensive backfield and a contributor on special teams, finishing the season with six tackles and one interception. He returned the interception 22 yards for a touchdown against VMI.

PERSONAL
Doubled as a wide receiver and safety for head coach Bryce Bevill at Bishop McNamara (Md.) High School, earning all-state honorable mention accolades as a pass-catcher in 2008. Received first team all-county and all-conference honors as a senior after finishing the season with 685 receiving yards and six touchdowns, as well as 67 tackles, two sacks and one interception.

  • Also earned all-conference honors as a member of the track team in the triple jump.
  • Member of the National Honor Society, the Science National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Received the University of Rochester George Eastman Young Leaders Award for his work as a student ambassador and peer minister.
  • Majored in kinesiology and health science at William & Mary.
  • Son of Jerome Couplin Jr. and Adrienne Montague.
