Biography

Michael McCarthy joined the Lions coaching staff in 2016 after spending the 2015 season with the Cleveland Browns as the offensive quality control coach. He works closely with Lions Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Line Coach Ron Prince in developing the team’s offensive line unit and helped pave the way to the team’s berth in the NFC Wild Card game last season.

LIONS COACHING HIGHLIGHTS

  • As the team’s first-round (16th overall) selection in the 2016 NFL Draft, rookie T Taylor Decker started all 16 games at left tackle for the Lions in 2016. Decker became the first Lions rookie offensive tackle to start all 16 games in a season since T Jeff Backus in 2001. Decker became the third rookie offensive lineman, joining Backus and G Larry Warford (2013), to start all 16 games since 2000.
  • The Lions also saw production and versatility from 2016 third-round pick G/C Graham Glasgow, who played in 15 games with 11 starts, including seven starts at left guard and four at center.

McCarthy entered the NFL ranks as a scouting and video intern for the New York Jets in 2008 and earned his first coaching job as the offensive line coach at the College of New Jersey in 2009. After spending two seasons (2010-11) as the video coordinator at Western Michigan, McCarthy served as a graduate assistant coach at Tulane (2012-13) and tight ends coach at North Carolina Central (2014).

A native of East Brunswick, N.J., McCarthy played outside linebacker and long snapper at Widener University and graduated with a bachelor’s of science in business administration with a concentration in sports management.

McCarthy and his wife, Catie, have one son, Michael Jr.
