Prior to Detroit, Swinton worked as a special teams assistant with the Bears while also overseeing the team’s outside linebackers in 2017. With his assistance, the Bears finished third in punt return average (10.5) and joined the Lions as the only team with two punts returned for touchdowns in 2017.

In 2016, he was named the 49ers’ special teams coordinator after working as an assistant special teams coach in Chicago in 2015. With Swinton as special teams coordinator, San Francisco allowed 19.8 yards per kickoff return in comparison to 25.7 in the season prior to his arrival. In addition, he helped increase the team’s punt return average (7.5 to 9.4) during that stint. In 2016, the 49ers ranked fifth and 10th in those two categories, respectively.

In his first stint with the Bears in 2015, Swinton worked as the assistant special teams coach. As part of the staff, P Patrick O’Donnell improved in a number of statistical categories for the Bears including gross average (44.2), net average (39.7) and punts inside the 20-yard line (28). With Swinton’s guidance, K Robbie Gould made a then career-high 33 field goals, which tied for second in the NFL in 2015. Gould also led the NFL in 2015 with a career-high seven made field goals from 50 yards or more.

Swinton spent two seasons on staff with the Denver Broncos as a special teams assistant coach. He helped Denver finish ninth in the NFL in field goal percentage (89.1) in 2014. Swinton spent time with Lions K Matt Prater in Denver in 2013, when Prater was named to the Pro Bowl after setting Denver’s franchise records in field goal percentage (96.2) and points scored (150). During Swinton’s time in Denver, a highlight of the Broncos special teams unit included Prater’s 64-yard field goal during the 2013 season, the longest in NFL history.

Swinton joined the Broncos after working as a special teams quality control coach for the Chiefs in 2012. During his time with Kansas City, Chiefs P Dustin Colquitt was named to his first Pro Bowl after finishing second in the NFL in punts inside-the-20 (45). Swinton earned his start in the NFL coaching ranks as a quality control and special teams assistant with the St. Louis Rams from 2009-11. He made his coaching debut at the University of Tennessee as a defensive graduate assistant for two seasons (2007-08).

A Newport News, Va., native, Swinton played both safety and basketball at Hampton University from 2003-06.
