Biography

Chris White begins his first season in Detroit coaching the tight ends after working with the University of Connecticut football program as the senior quality control director of football research and special projects in 2017.

Prior to UConn he spent four years (2013-16) as the special teams coordinator and running backs coach at the University of Iowa. During his time in Iowa City, he helped the team reach four bowl games, including a berth in the 2016 Rose Bowl after a perfect 12-0 regular season. During White’s time overseeing the running backs, Iowa’s offense in 2015 averaged 30.9 points and 386.1 total offensive yards, including 181.7 rushing yards per game. While he served as special teams coordinator, the Hawkeyes finished second in the Big Ten and 11th in the nation in punt returns in 2015, in addition to finishing fourth in the nation in kickoff returns.

White earned his start in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings in 2009 as an assistant special teams coach after working in various capacities at Syracuse (2000-08), Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo (1999-2000) and UNLV (1996-98). In his first season in Minnesota, he assisted in the Vikings winning a second consecutive NFC North Title in 2009. In addition, the special teams unit went on to send two representatives to the Pro Bowl in returner Percy Harvin and cover man Heath Farwell. Additionally, in 2009, Harvin set a Vikings record by returning a pair of kickoff returns for touchdowns during the season, including a 101-yard return that tied as the second-longest in Vikings history. White’s last two seasons in Minnesota were marked by the team’s 26.8-yard kickoff return average, which led the NFL.

He joined the Vikings staff following a nine-year stint (2000-08) at Syracuse where he assisted in several aspects of the football program. In his first three seasons (2000-03) with the Orange, White worked with the tight ends and served as the special teams coordinator. He went on to coach tight ends while also overseeing the program’s recruiting efforts in 2004. In his final four seasons at Syracuse, White coached the wide receivers group in addition to maintaining his role as the program’s recruiting coordinator.

White came to Syracuse after working as the defensive and special teams coordinator at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo in 1999. He also spent three seasons (1996-98) at UNLV coaching linebackers and special teams. White’s background also includes earning his first opportunity as a head coach at Bishop Manogue High School (Reno, Nev.) for three seasons (1994-96). During his time at the helm, he earned the Northern Nevada Coach of the Year award in his first season.

White’s first full-time coaching opportunity came as the assistant quarterbacks coach at Holy Cross in 1993. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Syracuse (1990-91) before working in the same capacity at Arkansas State in 1992.

The Groveland, Mass. native graduated from Colby College where he was a four-year starter at quarterback. He went on to receive a master’s degree in education from Syracuse. He and his wife, Angel, have two daughters, Payton and Riley.
