Dave Birkett, the Lions award-winning beat writer for the Detroit Free Press and previously for the Oakland Press, has been chosen to represent Detroit on the Selection Committee for the NFL’s Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The 46-member committee is made up of one media representative from each of the 32 NFL franchise cities (two are from New York), along with 13 at-large members and one from the Pro Football Writers of America.

The appointment to the selection committee is a prestigious one and carries the responsibility of voting on who is inducted into the Pro Football Hal of Fame.

The committee participates in a series of reduction votes each year to reduce the list of nominees to 17 finalists. From those 17, the committee ultimately votes to induct between four and seven into the Hall of Fame in an annual day-long meeting the day before the Super Bowl in the host city.

Detroit was without a committee representative last year.
