On Saturday, December 19th, 2015 Detroit Lions Punter Sam Martin will dedicate two very special gifts to homeless and challenged Detroiters.

Detroit, MI - On Saturday, December 19th, 2015, at 2:00 p.m., Detroit Lions Punter Sam Martin will dedicate two very special gifts to homeless and challenged Detroiters at the Elevate Detroit “CommuniD BBQ” site located at 3000 Fourth Street in Detroit, Michigan.

Martin paid the expenses for Elevate Detroit to purchase and install an industrial fire pit ring and a live Norway Spruce tree for the organization’s CommuniD BBQ site located in the Cass Corridor.  The fire pit was purchased to try and help keep displaced families and adults warm during the cold winter months and the Spruce will be planted and decorated for Christmas by Elevate Detroit’s community of homeless and challenged families and volunteers.

“I wanted to do something special to help Detroiters who are facing extraordinary challenges right now,” said Martin.  “Elevate Detroit does a great job trying to make sure these people have a decent meal, friendship, and a little hope.  When I heard about what they wanted to do for these folks, I was thrilled to be able to help.  This is what Christmas is really about.”

Elevate Detroit, a Michigan non-profit network comprised of volunteers from local churches and Metro Detroit residents, has been providing food and friendship to roughly 200 needy Detroiters every other Saturday, rain, snow, or shine, for nearly eight years.  Their CommuniD BBQ program is designed to not only feed Detroit’s homeless and hungry, but to connect people and build meaningful relationships in a community atmosphere.
“We are so grateful for Sam’s generous support,” said Mike Schmitt, Director of Elevate Detroit.  “These are precious and lasting gifts that will be permanent fixtures here for all to enjoy.  We are all about bringing the community together and helping take care of those in need.  This new fire pit and Christmas tree will serve that mission very well.”

The fire pit, an industrial-strength steel ring weighing 1,100 pounds, was manufactured for safety and strength by Cadillac Culvert, Inc. and had to be specially transported from Cadillac to the Detroit location.

The Christmas Spruce will be planted and decorated at the December 19th event.  Martin also donated the funding for the decorations, including outdoor ornaments and Sharpie markers to give everyone in the community there an opportunity to personalize an ornament and hang it on the tree.

Happy’s Pizza will be donating 50 hot pizzas to Elevate Detroit that day to help feed everyone at the BBQ.  Happy’s Pizza has been donating 50 pizzas a month to Elevate Detroit’s cause since September, 2015.
