Posted Dec 20, 2017

Darius Slay earned his second career defensive player of the week award after picking off two passes against Chicago.

A day after earning his first Pro Bowl selection, cornerback Darius Slay picked up his second career NFC Defensive Player of the Week Award. Slay intercepted a pair of passes in the Lions' Week 15 win against Chicago, bringing his season total to a league-best seven. His three pass breakups against the Bears leave him tied for first in the NFL with 20 on the season.

  • Slay’s two interceptions tied a single-game career high, marking the second time he has recorded two interceptions in a game after posting two picks against Atlanta in Week 3 (9/24).
  • Slay’s three pass defenses marked the seventh time in his career that he has recorded at least three pass break ups in a game.
  • By intercepting two passes against Chicago, Slay became the first Lions player with 7 interceptions in a season since S Glover Quin (7) in 2014. He also became the first Lions cornerback with 7 interceptions in a season since CB Bruce McNorton (7) in 1983.
  • Since 2000, Slay is the only player in the NFL to accumulate 5 tackles, 2 interceptions and 3 pass defenses twice in the same season (vs. Atl 9/24 and vs. Chi 12/16), and he is one of five players, including CB Deltha O’Neal (2), CB Ronde Barber (2), CB Rashean Mathis (2) and CB Antonio Cromartie (3), to do this twice overall during the past 18 seasons.
  • By reaching 20 pass defenses in 2017, Slay became the first Lions player to reach 20 pass defenses in a season since CB Bryant Westbrook (21) in 1998.
  • Slay has now taken sole possession of second place on the Lions all-time list for career pass defenses since 1991.
  • With 20 pass defenses through 14 games this season, Slay also moved into a tie with CB Bryant Westbrook (1997) for fourth in pass defenses in a single-season since 1991.
  • This is Slay's second career NFC Defensive Player of the Week Award (Week 5, 2016)
  • He is the fifth Lions player to earn multiple NFC Defensive Player of the Week Awards and the second cornerback to do so (Ray Crockett, 1991 Wk 8 & 1993 Wk 18).
