The Lions placed receiver Patrick Edwards on the practice squad injured reserve list and signed tight end Matt Veldman to the practice squad this morning.

It’s the second consecutive year Edwards has finished his season on injured reserve.

Veldman, who was with the Lions in training camp, took part in practice today.

With tight end Brandon Pettigrew battling an ankle injury, and his availability for Sunday still in doubt, Veldman gives the Lions another option at the position if they end up needing it.

Calvin Johnson (knee) stretched with his teammates but didn’t participate in the portion of practice open to the media. Also not practicing was: cornerback Darius Slay (knee), linebacker DeAndre Levy (foot), safety John Wendling (ankle) and cornerback Rashean Mathis (illness).

Slay worked along the side with trainers and looked good running, cutting and changing directions on that arthroscopically repaired knee. It doesn’t look like he’ll be out too much longer.

Cornerback Chris Houston (toe) was on the practice field for a second day in row, though he’s been listed as limited both days.

Punter Sam Martin (groin) was also limited after sitting out Wednesday.

Safety Louis Delmas (knee) was also limited.
