The regular season is officially over for Ryan Broyles, and it's about to begin for Montell Owens.

The Lions placed Broyles on season-ending injured reserve with a ruptured Achilles tendon he suffered in Sunday’s 31-30 win over Dallas.

Broyles had successful surgery on Tuesday.

To take his place on the 53-man roster, the Lions activated Owens off short-term IR.

Owens has not played since he suffered a knee injury in an August preseason game against New England. He was placed on short-term injured reserve at the time with the designation to return. He began practicing two weeks ago and should be active for the Lions’ next game Nov. 10 in Chicago.

Owens is expected to play a big role on special teams, where he’s a two-time Pro Bowler, and as a third running back.

He started four games at running back for Jacksonville last year and had 42 carries for 209 yards (5.0 average) and a touchdown. He also caught eight passes for 113 yards.
