The Detroit Lions continue their roster trim with the release of six players.

The Detroit Lions have completed their roster trim-down ahead of Tuesday’s 4 p.m. deadline to 75 players.

The most notable name released Monday was cornerback Jonte Green. A former sixth-round pick by the Lions in 2012, Green has played in 24 games with seven starts over the last two seasons in Detroit.

Green found himself behind Darius Slay, Rashean Mathis, Bill Bentley, Nevin Lawson, Cassius Vaughn, and Chris Greenwoodon the cornerback depth chart to start training camp, and hasn’t been able to leapfrog any of those names.

Green is eligible to sign with the Detroit Lions’ practice squad after the Aug. 30 cut-down date to 53 players, per the new practice squad rules, as long as another team doesn’t sign him.

The Lions also released cornerback Aaron Hester, fullback Chad Abram, quarterback James Franklin, punter Drew Butler and kicker Giorgio Tavecchio.

That means seventh-round pick Nate Freese will enter the season as the team's place kicker. Freese was in a close compeittion with Tavecchio for the job all through training camp.

The team also placed safety DeJon Gomes on injured reserve after he suffered a neck injury against Oakland in Week 2 of the preseason.

The next deadline to trim the roster is Aug. 30, when the Lions have to slim down to 53 players. The following day they can start to form their 10-man practice squad.
