The Lions need to have their roster trimmed down to 75 players by 4 p.m. on Tuesday. They began that process Friday by releasing five players.

The team waived veteran cornerback Domonique Johnson and veteran receiver Chaz Schilens.

They also parted ways with guard Derek Hardman and waived/injured defensive tackle John Drew and cornerback Ross Weaver.

Johnson and Schilens are vested veterans, which means they immediately become free agents and can sign with whichever team they chose.

Hardman will head to the waiver wire, where any team can stake a claim to him. Players on the waiver wire are awarded to teams based on last year’s record with the teams with the lowest win totals having first crack.

Drew and Weaver were waived-injured, which means if they are not claimed by another team -- which is likely -- they will revert back to the Lions and the team can either agree to an injury settlement or place them on injured reserve and rehab them.

After the release of Mike Thomas earlier in the week, the Lions roster is currently at 84.
