We all know what a match-up nightmare Lions receiver But imagine a Lions offense than can generate a mismatch on either side of the field.
What is a defense to do then?
Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan thinks his offense is close to finding out with receiver ![]()
“He’s a dangerous match-up for other teams,” Linehan said of Young. “To me, he might be the biggest match-up (advantage) we can continue to grow with the way people defend Calvin.
“When he gets on the outside part of the field, he can get behind the defense, and if you have that opposite a player like Calvin, that’s really when you got something."
Young showed tons of promise with 48 catches for 607 yards and six touchdowns this season. He averaged 12.6 yards per catch and finished seventh among rookies in catches and yards and fourth in touchdowns.
But Linehan thinks fans haven’t seen anything yet.
“We’re just scratching the surface right now,” he said of Young. “He’s quicker laterally than people would anticipate, so it’s hard for people to get their hands on him. He gets in and out of cuts so fast that a defender can’t transition with him, so he gains separation. A lot of guys are fast, but they aren’t sudden. He’s a rare combination of speed and quickness. He just gets open. “
The Lions had an obvious need for a third receiver behind Johnson and veteran ![]()
“He didn’t have an offseason and improved throughout the year,” Linehan said. “A lot of times rookies hit their wall, or whatever, his best games were at the end (of the season), which shows me he’s a mature competitor. He’s only going to get better and we’re just kind of getting started with him. I think he’s going to be pretty dynamic.”
It wasn’t until Week 8 that Young recorded his first NFL touchdown against the Broncos, which seemed to be a springboard for the rest of the season. He scored six touchdowns over the team’s final nine games.
“The sky is the limit for this kid,” said Lions receivers coach Shawn Jefferson. “This kid is one of the most talented receivers I’ve seen a while.”
Linehan thinks Young is only going to get better as his role in the offense increases.
“I think he’s everything we thought he’d be,” Linehan said. “His role is only going to increase and get better for us.”
