Free Agency setting up Tuesday to be an interesting day in Allen Park

Posted Mar 12, 2013

With 21 of the Detroit Lions' projected unrestricted free agents still unsigned, the landscape of the roster could look very different with the beginning of free agency today at around 4 p.m. ET

There hasn't been much news out of Allen Park over the last few days in terms of the Detroit Lions getting deals done with some of their own players.

General manager Martin Mayhew told reporters down at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis last month that he was looking at nine of the team's 23 respective free agents to aggressively pursue.

So far, only reserve offensive tackle Corey Hilliard and starting outside linebacker DeAndre Levy have re-upped for the 2013 season and beyond.

So, what's the holdup?

For his part, Mayhew is going to make sure he crosses his T's and dots his I's. Case in point: bringing in Louis Delmas late last week for a physical.

Mayhew isn't in a position to overspend when there are a lot of needs to address and limited space underneath the cap.

The player agents - and the players themselves, to a point - are looking for the most money possible on a free agent deal. Sometimes, they're better served seeing what the market presents and trying to get more than one team involved.

This three-day period, where teams were allowed to talk to player agents, could have presented interested suitors for players like Chris Houston and Louis Delmas – two players the Lions are interested in re-signing. They're going to weigh all their options, as they should.

Whatever the reason, the Lions still have 21 unrestricted free agents unsigned and ready to hit the market.

The landscape of this roster could start to look very different starting at around 4 p.m today, especially on defense, with Cliff Avril, Corey Williams, Lawrence Jackson, Justin Durant, Houston and Delmas all remaining unsigned at this point.

It's setting up to be an interesting Tuesday.
