It may be the weekend, but with the NFL Draft less than two weeks away, general manager Martin Mayhew and the rest of the Lions’ personnel and coaching staff aren’t about to leave any stone unturned.
The Lions welcomed Northern Illinois cornerback Rashaan Melvin for one of their allotted 30 pre-draft visits on Saturday.
Melvin impressed scouts last month at his Pro Day when he measured in just under 6-foot-2, weighed 192 pounds and ran the 40-yard dash in a reported 4.46 with a vertical jump of 38 inches.
Big cornerbacks are trending in the NFL right now and Melvin’s Pro Day performance could have earned him a mid- to late-round selection.
A two-year starter, Melvin broke the NIU record with 17 passes defended in 2012.
Almost as impressive was his performance in the Orange Bowl vs. Florida State this past season. He tied his career high with 10 tackles (six solo), including 1.5 tackles for loss, and forced a fumble that NIU recovered in the first quarter of an eventual 31-10 loss.
He finished his NIU career second all-time in passes broken up with 35. He had six interceptions and made 172 tackles, 117 solo, in 41 games.
