The Lions released defensive tackle C.J. Wilson.

The Lions released defensive tackle C.J. Wilson.

Wilson was claimed off waivers by Detroit last November to help bolster a defensive line dealing with injuries.

Wilson played in the last eight games of the season and recorded eight tackles and a sack.

His release saves the Lions $2.3 million on the 2016 cap -- $1.8 million in base salary with a $250,000 roster bonus and $250,000 workout bonus.

Defensive tackle is a position of need for the Lions this offseason. Starters Haloti Ngata and Tyrunn Walker are both unrestricted free agents, leaving Caraun Reid (third year) and Gabe Wright (second year) as the only tackles under contract next season with any real playing experience.

Ngata told last month he’d like to return to the Lions in 2016.
