Golden Tate Blog: The ultimate goal is to be a champion

WR Golden Tate blogs about wearing his Super Bowl ring and getting the entire offense on the field Friday vs. Jacksonville.

The Oakland road trip was the first time I wore my Super Bowl ring around these guys. I’m really proud to be a part of something like that because not everybody can say they’ve ever gone to the Super Bowl or have won it. Some guys can’t even say they’ve gone to the playoffs and they’ve played 15 or 20 years, so it’s a great blessing and it’s a great achievement.

To win a Super Bowl, it takes a complete team effort from top to bottom. Everyone has to do their job. That was kind of my mindset. Not only that, I wanted guys to see it, to see what we want to be. This is what we want to be eventually. This is what we are capable of.

I thought it was a good way to set the mood and get our minds right and help motivate guys a little more. When you have those days where you don’t feel like you want to work or you feel like you’re tired, think what the ultimate goal is, to be a champion.

A lot of guys wanted to see the ring and thought it was nice. When I first got here after I signed, a lot of guys had questions about what the atmosphere was like in Seattle and how far is Detroit from being a contender.

I think it would be really special to win one here in Detroit — this city is thirsty for a champion. We definitely have all the tools to be a champion. We just need to keep dialing in on the details, keep being coachable and keep playing hard-nosed tough football and we’ll be fine.

I’ve said it many times before, but Detroit has never lacked talent, ever. I think now is the time. We have the coaching staff. We have players who show up to work every day. Now we just have to win.

I’m really looking forward to getting the whole offense on the field this week. It’s the first week where it feels like a game week with all the preparation and the way meetings go. So guys are starting to dial in and figure out their routines.

We have the potential to make a lot of big plays, explosive plays, especially with the guys we have. It’s going to be fun. Now we just have to figure out the personality of our offense — what we are going to be known for. We are trying to figure out our identity every day in practice.

I’m not sure what to expect with Calvin on the field. It’s no secret that he’s the best in the game right now, best to ever play the game in my mind at receiver. I honestly feel like he’s going to benefit more. I think I’m going to open it up more for him, which is great.

They aren’t going to be able to triple-coverage him because we are going to have other guys like myself, Ogletree, Ebron and Fauria. I think it’s going to be really tough for teams to game-plan us. That is one thing I look forward to seeing ... seeing how teams try to stop us.
