Week 3 Lions postgame quotes

Head Coach Jim Schwartz

Opening statement:
"I've been around a lot of crazy games. I don't know if I've ever been around one like that. I give credit to the Titans. They made the plays in the game to win the game. We didn't make the plays. We had opportunities. We kept drives alive with penalties. We turned the ball over. We gave up special teams scores, two of them. And when that happens, we were lucky to just be in the game at the end."
On the sneak call:
"That was a miscommunication. We were going to try to draw them offsides and the crowd was loud and if they didn't jump we were going to take the time out and the ball ended up getting snapped. We need to obviously make sure that all eleven guys get the calls right there and be able to play it.
"I didn't want to take the delay of game if they didn't jump because, then if they're offsides on the field goal, then you're still going to be short of the first down. So I was getting ready to call a time out but unfortunately that's where we were.
"We had a great chance to get them offsides too. They were in a goal line type defense and I think we would have had a great chance to get them that way. If not, then we kick the field goal. And not saying that we would have won there because we didn't stop anybody on defense the rest of the way either."
On if he can elaborate to allow for better clarification on what happened:
"It was miscommunicated. That's as clear as I'm going to get. And when it all comes down, that's the coach's fault. That's my fault. I was right there in position to call a time out if I thought that it wasn't communicated well and I should have taken the time out there so that's on me. We thought we had a first down on the play before that, but we didn't. We also dropped a pass on a couple plays before that. We had opportunities there. Let's not blame it on the last play."
On if he had planned to kick the field goal:
"I think I've said enough. I was very clear on what I said and I'm not going to go any further into it."
On the ruling regarding the overtime personal foul penalty:
"I kept on trying to alert them to that fact. It's overtime, I can't challenge anything. Obviously there was a miscommunication from an enforcement standpoint. As soon as the play was declared incomplete, it should have been a first down 15 yards from the play before. But we also got them stopped and we get a penalty on third down and super long. That's another inexcusable type play."
On the status of QB Matthew Stafford:
"Unable to finish the game. Muscle pull, I don't know what you call it; hamstring, it was a leg pull. It had started bothering him early in the game and his mobility was limited through the game but it just got to the point that we had to go with Shaun (Hill). Shaun's always ready. The guys have a lot of confidence in Shaun for his ability to score."
On if Stafford couldn't return due to chasing down the Titans defender following a turnover:
"Probably. That was the last play that he played."
On why WR Nate Burleson didn't play late in the game:
"Burleson was cramping up. He couldn't even walk."
On the performance of the defense:
"Can't give up big plays. We get a play down the seam that, even if the guy makes a circus catch behind our guy's back, gotta get that guy cleaned up and get off the field. But it's not like we're in an all out blitz. We have a safety back there that needs to be able make the play.
"The other one we have a chance to either break a ball up or make a tackle we do neither one and they go a long way. You don't play good defense by giving up big plays. We kept drives alive with penalties. That's poor defense when you're giving up big plays and you're keeping drives alive with penalties."
On the play of the special teams units:
"Poor play. They caught us on the throw-back. We had all the momentum in the world. We got in and score and give it right back to them on that long kick. That's a combination of kick and coverage. Ball placement wasn't good, our coverage wasn't good."
On RB Mikel Leshoure not being in the game toward the end:
"He had played a lot. Joique (Bell) had made plays. Unfortunately he dropped that one ball. But we had confidence in him being able to make plays and he had made plays throughout the game. That was a long game. It was hot. We were just going with a fresher guy at that point."
On the play of QB Shaun Hill:
"That's stuff that we work on a lot. Trying to get chunks and trying to keep ourselves alive to try and make a play at the end. Unfortunately it wasn't enough. Shaun's always stepped in and played well for us and I don't want to say there was no question because it was going to be difficult, but the guys, the coaches, everybody had confidence in Shaun Hill."
On it taking awhile to get WR Calvin Johnson the ball:
"They were just playing prevent defense and they were trying not to give up the big play. Held us to some field goals. We had a couple chances to keep drives alive that we didn't do. And when a team does that, you really force to execute your way down the field.
"And particularly early in the game when we were being held to field goals, we didn't execute as well as we should. At the end of the game we started we sort of put them on their heels a bit. Their approach was to not give up the big play. We still made a couple, but particularly early in the game, we didn't make enough."
On not getting after the quarterback:
"We have to rush better. We have some injuries in the back end and we rely on those guys up front and we certainly not only need to rush better but also do a better job of containing the quarterback who we knew had good legs and the ability to create a play on his own."
On not gelling as a team:
"We're 1-2. There's a lot to clean up."
On TE Brandon Pettigrew's dropped balls and the fumble:
"The first one he tried to turn and run before he caught the ball. The other one the guy stole the ball from him. We dropped a couple key passes in this game including one at the end. It wasn't just Brandon. We had other guys that didn't make plays. They made more plays than we did. Give the Titans credit, they made more plays than we did and they deserved the win. We didn't."

QB Matthew Stafford

On his injury:
"I'm okay. It's just something that was bothering me during the week a little bit. I didn't miss some plays at practice or anything, but I could feel it. Trying to treat it, get it ready and felt it on the scramble early and then felt it going after that guy late in the game. I don't know, we'll see. I've got to take a look at it."
On what the injury is:
"It's just an upper leg; (a) muscle. I don't know if it's a glute or hamstring or something – just high right leg."
On if it was something that was coming on to him:
"It's something that was bothering me a little bit during the week. I kind of felt it all week. Was trying to keep it loose, trying to sit on a heat pack all game and keep me warm. Just felt it a couple times and after that guy started going the other way with it, I tried to take off and didn't want to make go out on me."
On settling for field goals in the first half:
"Just third downs in the red zone. We didn't execute plays well enough on third down in the red zone early on in the game. In a game like that, every point counts."
On if he thinks he needs to impose his will with Calvin more in the passing game:
"We honestly didn't see one single snap of single-high coverage, so it's kind of tough to impose your will when they've got seven, eight and nine dropping every time. We've got to be able to run the ball and we were able to move the chains with it a couple times. Just got to some third-and-ones and couldn't covert. That's frustrating as an offense and we kind of threw because we had to get back into it later in the game and were able to make some tight throws and, frankly, some great catches to keep it going."
On if coverage didn't change on the touchdown drive when CJ had three catches for 55 yards:
"Yeah, I mean, we were taking some chances trying to fit balls in some tough spots and he made some great catches. We made some great calls from Scott, too. It's obviously not fun losing the game and we've just got to get back to the drawing board and get ready for next week."
On being on the sideline during the rally:
"Yeah, I told him: I hate leaving him out there right there – he sat the whole game, he's got to try and go out there. The guy played unbelievable. I was really happy for him. Guys kept playing and, shoot, anything can happen. I've never been a part of anything like that where (you) throw a touchdown and get an onside kick or a hail mary and it works and then go into overtime. Just tough breaks along the way today. Had too many balls bouncing around and had too many mistakes and penalties that cost us."
On if this leg thing could be a lingering thing:
"I have no idea. I've got to look at it."
On if this loss is more frustrating because we had the chance to pull it out but couldn't get over the hump:
"Every loss is tough. Every game is different. This one was obviously a crazy one. Haven't been a part of many like this and unfortunately we weren't able to come out on the better side of it."
On if Leshoure can be a difference-maker for him:
"It's yet to be seen – it's his first start. But he definitely has talent. He's got to get his feet wet and we've got to find ways to get him in space."

QB Shaun Hill

On the final play:
"I'll take full responsibility for that. There was a miscommunication and it's up to the quarterback to get all 11 on the same page, for sure."
On what the miscommunication was:
"I'll just leave it at that. It was on me and I'll take full responsibility."
On what he thought about the spot:
"It's not my job to spot the ball. I don't second-guess them, I don't question them. Where they put it down, that's where we play."
On if he had warmed up prior to leading the Lions to 14 points in 18 seconds:
"Yeah, I try to stay warm on the sidelines all day. That's kind of what I always do. I try to stretch from time to time, pick up a ball, throw it from time to time – that's my sideline routine, just in case something like that happens. That's a long time to sit on the sidelines and then just strap it up and go if you're not keeping yourself warm throughout the game. That's something I've always done."
On the bank shot to Titus Young:
"Yeah, we were playing the bank there (laughter). Obviously that's a play that you really don't get to practice a whole lot full speed, but the guys were really locked in and knew their assignments on it and executed it to perfection."
On if he knew he had a chance when the ball deflected:
"Yeah, I mean, I saw Titus just kind of come in and grab it. As far as when I thought he had a chance at it, I probably knew about the same time everybody else did – when he was in the endzone with it. It was quite a play by him."
On the defense going into a prevent defense from the beginning and the difference in the second half:
"Yeah, that's it. Just sticking with the plan – staying with it – we know that eventually things are going to turn and we're going to be able to make some of those plays and move the ball and put some points up. We just have a very resilient group. If you go out and you have a half of ball that doesn't go the way you want, you just come back for the next half and keep going; keep grinding."
On the emotion of the locker room after the game:
"Yeah, that was a tough one. All the ups and downs throughout that game and then to be right there at the end with a chance to win it. I know I liked our chances there at the end."
On if he thinks Leshoure got the first down:
"Like I said, I honestly don't know. I don't second guess those guys. Where they put it, I play it."
On if he thought he got the first down:
"Do I think I did? I have no idea."
On if he thinks he'll be in for a game or two:
"That I have no idea on either. No clue."
On how the play worked where he miscommunicated:
"Obviously that's the quarterback's job is to get all 11 on the same page, so that's definitely on me."
On if the crowd played into it:
"Yeah, the crowd … for those that stuck around, they certainly got loud there at that time in the game."

DE Kyle Vanden Bosch

On the loss:
"It's a tough one to swallow. But, we did some pretty incredible things to give ourselves a chance to win that game. We just made too many mistakes, gave up too many big plays. It's hard to fathom how we could even be in the game and have a chance at the end. We're too good of a team, we have too many good players, too many veteran players to give up some of the plays we gave up."
On the third quarter and fourth quarter emotions:
"I don't know. It was hard. It was just ups and downs. It's just tough right now."
On regrouping and looking at stopping the big play:
"There's one or two things you can do after a game like this. You can feel sorry for yourselves or you can get back to work and move forward and this team has done that in the past. We're going to learn from this game. We're going to make corrections and make sure the mistakes we made today won't happen again and just move forward."
On state of the lockeroom:
"It's shocking. This team, the guys in this locker room have proven time and time again that we have a ton of fight and we're not going to give up. We've had our backs against the wall, we kept fighting, kept fighting gave ourselves a chance. It's frustrating and difficult right now that we didn't come out on top but games like this, their resiliency, the fact that we came back so dramatically and gave ourselves a chance."
On frustration with officials:
"We've got nobody to blame but ourselves for this loss."
On official mistakes:
"You can't point this one at anybody but ourselves."

RB Mikel Leshoure

On his first regular season game being that crazy:
"It was fun, it was exciting for me – tough loss. It was a long game, good game. Took us a little bit to get rolling. The first half, we had some possessions where had missed opportunities to get it in as far as touchdowns. But it is what it is, but we're learning from it and we plan to come back next week with a win."
On execution in the run game:
"We've been getting a lot better with the run games this year, in general. We stuck with it today. The offense line gave us a push and I tried to go out there and do my job to the best of my ability."
On what's going through everybody's mind at the end of the game:
"You've just got to keep playing, that's the whole thing. It's always been like that on any level. The game's never over until (the clock says) zero-zero and that was a perfect example of that today. We fought hard. Unfortunately we came up a little bit short and we've got to come back and eliminate some of the things that got us in this situation and hopefully that will help us win."
On not being in the game in the fourth quarter:
"Nothing serious – it was just, Joique was rolling and they kept him in there. We're a team – we're a group of unselfish guys. I don't complain, I don't pout about it."
On almost getting the first down on the last play:
"Yeah, I did feel like I had it. Unfortunately, it's a different spot – the referees spotted the ball the way that they did. That one thing isn't going to control the game. We did a lot of things earlier in the game that we could have eliminated. Felt like I reached over and got it, but I didn't."
On what he'll remember from this game this most:
"I got a little taste in the preseason – it's a fast game. It's a fast, physical game and the little things matter. That's why I need to go in and watch film and correct the little things that are going to make me better, make my teammates better."

Rob Sims

On if this was one of the craziest games he's been a part of:
"It's a lot of ups and downs in this game period. It was crazy to be down the way we were down and then fight back in it and then lose the way we lost … that was one of the craziest games I've ever been a part of. We lost the game and that's it. You've just got to keep playing, keep going. Sometimes you win, sometimes you don't."
On to what extent they feel they shot themselves in the foot:
"I would say a lot. When you watch this tape tomorrow, I'm sure it's going to be the majority of us. Not what they did to us, it's going to be the majority of what we did to ourselves. Definitely is going to be an interesting day tomorrow in film. You go in there and take your licks and then get ready for the next one."
On the final play:
"We're going to have to go back and look at that more on film. I don't know for sure what happened – miscommunication we had or whatever. But it's something we're going to have to take a look at tomorrow."
On the running game:
"I think it was effective. A guy like Mikel – rushing for 100-plus yards – that should be the norm for a guy like that. It was good. We got some blocks up front and he was hitting the holes really good. That will be all good tomorrow, too. When you don't win – those little shallow victories you come out with don't really mean that much."
On scoring two touchdowns in the final 1:16:
"I mean, that's something we've been able to do here when our backs are against the wall. We've just need to learn how to go out there and be like that all the time."
