Week 13 Colts Postgame Quotes

Posted Dec 2, 2012

Colts Head Coach Bruce Arians

On if he was the one who got hit on the sideline:
“Yeah, I did. I gave my best hit.”
On being hoarse:
“I had a little talk with officials. But obviously we’re elated at the victory. Some teams find ways to win, others don’t. Ours do. Can’t be prouder of the game. Another team victory. Our defense got them off the field there at the end. It’s never till the last tick goes off the clock. I thought Andrew (Luck) was outstanding in the last drive especially overcoming some poor plays early in the game that we’ve still got to rectify on the road. But we found a way to win a big ball game on the road against a very quality opponent. Don’t care about the stats. The only stat that matters is No. 8 (wins). We’ve got a fighting bunch of guys and we’ve got a fighting coach at home.”
On being 7-1 in one possession games:
“Our guys are fighters, man. They’re resilient. They don’t quit. They believe next man up. We were down to no offensive lineman left and A.Q. (Shipley) went in and played his tail off at guard. Guys kept stepping up, offensively, defensively. Guys jumped in that we just learned their names Wednesday, played special teams. Yeah, we find a way to win.”
On the final play and Avery being the last option:
“Yeah, he was No. 5. We had basically spread everybody across the back of the end zone and ran Donnie (Avery) across the field as an outlet. I was hoping he’d catch it a little closer to the goal line. But we knew they’d sink everybody back in. And I actually thought the game was over on Reggie’s incompletion. It was a great play by Andrew getting out of there, scanning the field. They were, all the receivers going left and Donnie was coming back right.”
On Luck almost attempting to run the ball in earlier in the possession:
“I didn’t like him taking off on first down. I thought we wasted too much time. At that point in time we’re playing the clock, not the Lions, and you don’t run and they end up a yard short or half a yard short but we can’t run for a first down at this point in time. We’ve got to keep throwing it. Did a good job of finding Vick (Ballard). Just continuing to make first downs and give us a shot into the end zone. At that point, when you’re playing at that, you want shots into the end zone preferably from the 14 instead of the 50. And we were able to make a big play down to Reggie down the middle. The rest’s history.”

Colts QB Andrew Luck

On the final touchdown play:
“Yeah, you know, we were sort of stalled it seemed at that 10 or whatever yard line area, the 14-yard line. It’s tough to just sit back there and try to throw it when they’re dropping in their zones and doing a good job. So, I figured, you know, buy a little time and run around a little, maybe it’ll open up a window. You always hesitate throwing the ball not in the end zone, you know, for fear of the clock running out or a guy in bounds like it happened in the Georgia game the night before. So, looking downfield, I guess took the calculated risk that Donnie (Avery) could get there and he did. I’m thankful because, you know, we played some bad ball. I played a lot of bad ball, but I’m thankful for a great defense keeping us in there and then I’m thankful to be on a team that just keeps playing.”
On if he thought he had a touchdown to WR Reggie Wayne the previous play:
“You know, I didn’t really see what happened, so I didn’t want to get too excited if things don’t happen. But I guess the defender made a nice play.”
On the deep touchdown pass to WR Lavon Brazill:
“That was his job. I sort of moved around a little bit in the pocket and I guess the defender’s eyes got on Reggie (Wayne) maybe and Lavon just kept on running and did a heck of a job going up for the football. That was obviously a big moment for us to go within one score and have a chance.”
On if he takes personal responsibility for the turnovers:
“Not all on yourself, you know, then even worse things start happening. But, you know, at least I feel there is somewhat of an owning up on you when you throw two, three picks or miss open guys. I’m thankful just to have a chance to go back out there to try and win the game. You know, credit the defense and special teams for that.”

Colts DE Cory Redding

On if Luck impresses him more and more every week:
“Oh, yeah. He’s truly doing some unbelievable things right now. Throwing in tough situations. It’s a team game, man. Our offense was struggling so we knew we had to pick it up, make some plays and get some good stops and give them back the ball to make some plays down in the end and we did that.”
On if he thought the team had a win in them down 31-21 with three minutes left:
“We don’t know no better. We just keep playing. We always say ‘Don’t look at the scoreboard.’ You just keep playing. And when the clock reads zero, look up and see where it’s at. We don’t have to be the best team on Sunday. We’ve just got to beat that team by one. Just have one more point than they do. And that was the mindset. We went in there and we came out with a victory.”
On WR Calvin Johnson:
“That dude’s a beast. Every year as long as he’s in the League, I don’t care what he’s doing, he’s got my Pro Bowl vote. The guy’s an awesome kid. I remember him coming in as a rookie and just seeing his work ethic. And what he’s doing now, I expect that because he’s an unbelievable player and does great things. He’s truly a good teammate.”

Colts CB Cassius Vaughn

On how the Colts stayed up on WR Calvin Johnson:
“It was a 60 minute game and like I said it wasn’t an individual game. We knew that we had to contain him and I thought we kind of did. He got off but we won the game, it was a 60 minute game. We didn’t falter from what we were trying to do. That was it.”
On saving the game with your tackle on RB Joique Bell:
“We tried to run to the ball no matter what. The ball was still in place. I mean we didn’t…in second and one we feel like nobody can run past us and we bank on this. If you break out, we’ll be back there to stop it so we going to run no matter what. Me and Joe (Lefeged) we end up trying to get him. He got him first and I came and got him and that’s a four point swing. That’s the little part of the game, like I said it was a team effort. We knew our offense was going to get going. We never doubted it.”
On how this week was different:
“We had a great week of practice. We just…we believe. It wasn’t nothing else to do but believe in what we had.”
On the game that WR Calvin Johnson had:
“I mean how many teams done stopped him? None. I mean he gets paid the big bucks for a reason and Calvin’s a great player. He’s the best player on that team hands down. And we knew he was going to get his, but we were going to contain him as much as we could. Like I said, it was a 60 minute game. It wasn’t about him getting everything. Our focus wasn’t on we got to keep him from getting so many catches. We got a team win. We stopped the run first.”

Colts WR Reggie Wayne

On what about the team allows them to win close games:
“It’s just young and don’t know no better. Don’t know any better, man. They just know to just keep playing, at the end of the game just see the way we fall out. That’s a credit just to the coaches. Just keeping the guys into it, keeping them to play towards the end and guys just go out there and keep fighting and fighting till it’s all over.”
On if the team is still upbeat down two scores with three minutes to go:
“We was on the sideline saying that man we need some big chunks. We need some big chunks. Somebody just make a play. I guess you’re never out of it until it’s all over and guys just kept pushing and pushing. It was ugly. It was terrible. But we find a way to win.”
On being 7-1 in one possession games:
“Yeah, we are, man. We are. That’s Coach Pagano from Day 1, just instilling and telling us just to keep fighting, keep fighting, keep playing. Guys, like I said, guys really don’t know any better, man. We just know just to go out there, tell us to run into a brick wall, we’re going to run into a brick wall. Guys just never gave up. It was kind of shocking because on that last drive, defense came off the field and they were saying ‘Man, we’re about to win this, we’re about to win this.’ It just goes to show you how this team is, man, how resilient we are. Guys just keep playing and it was a good one.”
