WR Maurice Stovall selected as a Week 1 captain

The Detroit Lions announced team captains as voted on by the players: quarterback Matthew Stafford, center Dominic Raiola, defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch and kicker Jason Hanson.

All four, also voted captains in 2010, will wear the captain "C" patch on their jersey throughout the season.

"We have good leadership on our team," said Head Coach Jim Schwartz. "We like the combination of veterans on our team; we like the combination of young players and our best players are also our hardest working players.

"That will help us get through anything that goes our way."

Schwartz also announced that the Lions will have a captain of the week as selected by the coaches, considering Hanson is always warming up during the coin toss.

"This week it will be Maurice Stovall," said Schwartz. "He's been one of our leaders on special teams and really done an outstanding job."

Though these four players are tangibly recognized as captains, there are plenty of leaders within the Lions' locker room.

"We're not one of those teams (that) throw eight captains out there for the toss," said Schwartz. "We had a lot of guys get a lot of different votes. (The guys we send out) will reflect the leadership we have on our team."
