Extreme caution is exercised by NFL teams after a concussion - thorough testing is performed before a player can be cleared to get back on the field - meaning there is a real possibility Best will not be able to play this week.
"He's obviously a key part of what we do offensively, but we've been very efficient without him in the game in the past," said Head Coach Jim Schwartz.
Best's most productive game was against the Chicago Bears when he rushed for 163 yards with a touchdown.
Aside from that game, Best's highest rushing total was 72 yards at Tampa Bay in Week 1. Though he has just one 100-yard rushing performance this year, though, Schwartz believes Best has been efficient in the run game all season.
If he is unable to play, however, the Lions will look to veteran
"(We like) a lot about both of those guys," said Schwartz. "Maurice has answered the bell anytime that it’s rung for him. He’s been a very productive runner for us. We know that he’ll do well if he plays on Sunday.
"And Keiland has shown some really nice things. A little bit more short yardage and goal line and things like that, but that doesn’t mean that’s the only thing that he can do. He played a lot of third-down back for the Redskins last year. He’s done some really nice things for us.
"No matter who we’re handing the ball to, we expect them to gain yards and be able to make explosive plays for us."
Schwartz says the scheme may not look exactly the same, but the objective will continue to be efficiency for the offense as a whole.
"Whether that’s running the ball, passing the ball, whatever it is, (we have to) get the ball in the endzone," said Schwartz. "We need to do a better job. That’s the one thing we didn’t do as a good a job as we’ve done in the past this last week."
