LIONS HEAD COACH JIM SCHWARTZ
- Opening Statement:
- "I just got done doing radio and I took a lot of questions on where we think the team is and what kind of training camp we had, what kind of preseason we had and the only answer that I have is: none of that matters. The only thing that matters is how we go forward from this point. Preseason don’t count; how we did in training camp doesn’t count; it’s how we respond during the season – 16 regular season games and on after that. Try to put preseason where it is; let’s not read too much into in and let’s go to work next week for Chicago."
- On how difficult it will be to narrow the roster down:
- "I thought particularly in the fourth quarter – when knew it would – we had some guys really fighting hard for jobs. I said before, you want to see guys win jobs. I think guys that ended up making our roster, they will have won jobs in the fourth quarter of this game. Defense played a lot of snaps; we were really shorthanded. We were putting people in a couple of positions that they don’t play, but I thought they soldiered through and did a really nice job there. We’ll have some difficult decisions."
- On what he did at MLB with LB
Landon Johnson and LB
Rocky Boiman playing as well:
- "Vinny (Ciurciu) played in there also. I thought that early on- again it’s hard to see – Landon (Johnson) showed up in the game. Landon did a nice job with the huddle; we didn’t have any missed assignments, we didn’t have a fire drill, so to speak, where we were messing a lot of things up. Both of those guys are veteran players; both of them played inside and outside linebacker and had pretty good long careers. So we expected them to go out and be able execute our defense."
- On S
Louis Delmas not playing:
- " That was another one; he wasn’t 100 percent and it didn’t make a whole lot of sense to put somebody out there when we got the Chicago game coming up and I wanted guys 100-percent going into the Chicago game. So, anybody that was nursing something, we just decided it was better not to even have them out there."
- On if he is concerned that Delmas may not play against Chicago:
- "I don’t think so. I think we’re pretty confident that he’ll be back out there."
- On QB
Matthew Stafford ’s work tonight:
- "He had the one play – sort of put him in a bad position. The NFL sort of tweaked the no huddle rule and that interception was a little bit on me because I commanded the offense to go no huddle there. It’s something we didn’t really prepare this week; didn’t do anything. It really took them by surprise, but I wanted them to get used to the new sort of procedure. We just got a memo this week on how they were going to change their mechanics on no huddle and stuff like that and I didn’t want potential the first time that we would do it in the regular season. So I wanted just to have Matt go through it and it backfired on us. That was more of the Head Coach’s fault than the quarterback’s fault."
- On what the change was:
- "They’re just trying to get out of there quicker and they’re looking at one of the linesman for the signal to be able to snap. I thought our tempo was good with it. But again, it’s something that we hadn’t practiced; it was a play that we hadn’t practiced and more me trying to get something out of a preseason game and trying to do something rather than in a bad play by the quarterback or the wide receiver."
LIONS QB DREW STANTON
- On how he felt:
- "Good. This is my first preseason I’m not going to have to have any surgery and I (got) to play everything. So that’s a blessing in itself"
- On tonight being an opportunity for players to make a case to be on the final 53-man roster:
- "I think it goes to show that these guys – how hard everybody’s been working and everybody knows their last hurrah to kind of get out there and show what they’re capable of, whether they are going to be here or putting out a good film for some other team. I think it was on both sides of the ball that we can say that we did that collectively in the third and fourth quarter and be able to come away with a victory."
- On what he needed to show in this preseason game:
- "I think just getting out there and operating the offense efficiently and being consistent with that and playing within myself and understand what’s going out there; knowing the situation. Because at times, for instance last week, I got in there and got three snaps for a four-minute offense; the week before I ran a two-minute drill; all that stuff I’m getting the opportunity to do and learn from is invaluable."
LIONS RB KEVIN SMITH
- On his performance today:
- "I have to look at the film, but I need to make sure I was assignment-sound. I’m just looking for little things within my body; do I have a hitch in my step, and just working on getting better and my body’s health. So I’ll watch the film.. Last week, I didn’t have a good game so I’ll watch the film to see what I did good, to see what I did bad, and evaluate it and get ready for Week 1."
- On his health and how he feels about his knee:
- "I can sit here and say I trust my knee and I trust everything, but its going to take work.. This is my third preseason game – and actually my first preseason game I really didn’t have that many snaps. I’ve just started to get back into the grove of football; game tackling, making moves – so I’m looking forward to getting better."
LIONS DT LANDON COHEN
- On trying to send a message during the game:
- "I definitely tried to. If you’ve followed me over the past couple years, you know in the fourth game the pressure was on and I like to come through under pressure."
- On how he has fared in competition for a roster spot:
- "I think it’s going well. All I can do is go out there and play football and make plays, and that’s what they pay me to do – so that’s what I’m (going to) do."
- On what he has learned from veteran teammates on the defensive line:
- "Just the work ethic, and just keep driving, driving, driving every time you put your hand in the dirt. It’s nonstop attitude.
Corey Williams also gave me a lot of pass rush tips to improve my game. That’s what I’ve improved on since last year the most, rushing the passer."
- On if he’ll be anxious over the next couple of days waiting for the roster to be cut to 53:
- "No, I’m (going to) sleep well. I’m (going to) sleep well tonight."
- On what it would mean to him to make the 53-man roster:
- "It would mean a lot because I’ve built a great bond with these guys. It would definitely mean a lot. I want to be on this defensive line."
LIONS CB PAUL PRATT
- On his 102-yard interception return for a touchdown:
- "I’m just so happy. Once I caught that ball, I got up so fast and I saw nothing in front of me. I saw one lineman coming and I said, ‘Ain’t no way he’s gonna catch me." Once I broke to daylight down the sideline I was just running like everybody was chasing me – and my teammates were the only people that were chasing me. It’s a great feeling. I can’t really explain how I feel right now."
- On if the interception return was enough of a statement to make the final roster:
- "I do think that was a great play, and I hope that they look at that play as something to my board of great plays this season, so I hope that it’s enough. I know that they like me, and they brought me back for a reason, so I hope that play is enough. This is a business and we have great cornerbacks on this team, and I don’t really worry about that. I just go out there and just play, and just take one play at a time and not worry about the things I can’t control. I’m just happy I got that play on tape."
