HEAD COACH JIM SCHWARTZ
- On the close loss:
- "We need to find a way to make that one more play. When we do that we will win. There have been some obstacles and we haven’t done a good job of overcoming them. We have battled in every single game and there is no reason to get discouraged or panic. It is time to step up and make those plays. There were a lot of opportunities in this game. We need to find a way to make that one play. We are very, very close and once we get over the hump we are going to get on a nice run."
- On quarterback
Shaun Hill ’s performance:
- "He is a warrior and a competitor. I am glad that he is on our team. He has had some turnovers, but again, you have to look at a lot of those turnovers and how they happened. I am sure there are a lot of plays that he would like to have back, but he has battled and kept us in games. Shaun (Hill) has given us a chance in every single game, mainly due to his competitive nature and his resiliency to keep looking at the next drive."
- On Green Bay’s defensive approach:
- "They played a lot of man coverage. We were able to chase them out of some coverage late. They started dropping eight a lot and they tried to clog up lanes. It opened up some things inside. You saw the tight ends make some plays and you saw the running backs make some plays. They have some good pass rushers. Those guys can rush the quarterback."
QB SHAUN HILL
- On his interceptions:
- "Some of those things like that come from not playing together much. Some of those are soon to be alleviated. The more that we are together and playing, the less that will happen. We fought so hard today. We deserved that win. We deserved to get the feeling of a win. I just feel terrible that we haven’t gotten that yet."
- On not being able to score more touchdowns in the red zone:
- "That’s a good defense. They played well down there (in the red zone) and we weren’t able to make the plays that were there."
- On the Detroit’s offense:
- "Every game that we have played has been against an unbelievable defense. There are premiere defenses in the league and we have held our own. We have done some good things offensively. We have a lot of pieces of the puzzle and you saw a lot of those pieces come together tonight."
LB JULIAN PETERSON
- On Green Bay’s final drive of the fourth quarter:
- "We’ve just got to find a way to finish the game. We did a good job creating turnovers, but in the last four minutes we’ve got to find a way to get off the field – make a play somehow, some way. Hats off to Green Bay, they did a good job in the last four minutes."
- On the team’s 0-4 record:
- "It’s tough. Realistically, I feel like we should be 3-1, at the minimum 2-2. It’s unfortunate to be 0-4 right now. We just need to go back and evaluate and see what we can do, but the biggest thing is we have to make a play and find a way to get it done."
- On the defense’s ability to slow down Green Bay’s offense:
- "We had a pretty good game plan. Hats off to our defensive coordinator and the rest of the staff. They did a good job of getting us good matchups and confusing their offense as much as possible. We made some plays, but if we got off the field in that last four minutes, our offense was doing a good job moving the ball, who is to say we don’t come out of here with a victory?"
RB JAHVID BEST
- On the team’s missed opportunities:
- "We made a couple mistakes as an offense – I had a fumble, I slipped, and we threw a pick. Those are just two things right there that I can do better myself. We’ve just got to keep getting better every week. We’re getting closer and closer, but there are some things that we did that didn’t help us."
- On his toe injury:
- "It came along good this week and it wasn’t a factor today; it was fine."
- On the team’s offensive performance:
- "When we’re rolling I think we’re one of the best offenses in the league. We’ve just got to stop shooting ourselves in the foot with penalties and mistakes. It’s just self-inflicted wounds that kill us."
- On the play of quarterback Shaun Hill:
- "He has definitely stepped in and there’s been no drop off. We all knew that when Matt (Stafford) went down, he (Hill) was going to be good for us."
WR CALVIN JOHNSON
- On the team’s offensive performance:
- "We played better as an offense, but all that falls by the wayside when you don’t get the win. We knew it was going to be a fight. We were able to get some good matchups and take advantage of them. Everybody was touching the ball, but we need to cut down on penalties and execute plays."
DE KYLE VANDEN BOSCH
- On the improvement on the team:
- "We're fighting, we're close. It's a bottom-line business though. We're 0-4 and we have to find a way to win."
- On whether one win will help them get over the hump:
- "I hope so. I think winning will help this team a lot. Winning is hard in this league, but we've got to find a way to get that one. I think it will really help our confidence. Football is a game of momentum, we have to get momentum and we have to keep it."
- On the penalties:
- "I had too many penalties myself, which is something I can't do. A part of my role on this team is to be a leader and be smart and I made too many penalties myself and as a team we made too many penalties. Those are difficult to overcome, but I think on both offense and defense we did a pretty good job of overcoming penalties for the most part, but in the end it's just too many penalties."
CB ALPHONSO SMITH
- On how his interception play unfolded:
- "It was great play by myself, but I want to give all the credit to my man Louis (Delmas). He’s the one who gave me the alert. He recognized it as soon as they came out of the huddle. When he gave me the alert, the only thing I had to do was just go ahead and make the play. Greg (Jennings) and I both went up at the same time, and I was fortunate enough for that play to come out on the right end, which is my end."
- If there is a feeling that the Lions gave the game to the Packers:
- "I wouldn’t necessarily say gave them the game, because they competed as hard as we did. The penalties definitely hurt us. You can look at yourself when you shoot yourself in the foot. All of the penalties and the little things that we gave up. That’s the difference between winning and losing. It’s been the difference between winning and losing the last four weeks."
- On if the secondary responded to a challenge by Lions Defensive Coordinator Gunther Cunningham this week:
- "Every week, it’s not only one week. The secondary has to respond to a challenge, because this is the NFL. It’s an offensive league and the secondary will be tested. Everybody else gets covered up. The D-linemen get covered up. The linebackers get covered up. The defensive backs never get covered up, so week. Week in and week out."
