Detroit, MI—The Detroit Lions have named Mark Tamminga of Grand Rapids South Christian High School the week six recipient of the 2013 High School Football Coach of the Week Program.

Coach Tamminga led his Sailors to a 35-29 overtime victory over Grand Rapids Catholic Central on October 4 to claim their fifth victory of the season.  In his 6th season as a head coach at South Christian, Tamminga has posted a 38-21 career record, which included winning the Division 4 State Championship in 2012.  Tamminga spent 25 years as an assistant coach at South Christian before taking on the head coaching duties.  This Friday, South Christian will look to go 6-1 and clinch a playoff berth as they travel to take on OK Conference-Gold rival Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills.

In addition to his accomplishments on the field, Tamminga and the South Christian High School Athletic Department administer baseline neurocognitive tests to all student-athletes prior to both their freshman and junior year.   The Athletic Department follows the Zurich Guidelines concussion protocol which affords a very extensive return to play progression.  The school’s Head Athletic Trainer is also a major influence on the coaches and student-athletes in terms of providing quality player health and safety education.
