Lions without Calvin Johnson for preseason opener

The Lions will be without Calvin Johnson for Saturday’s preseason opener vs. Cleveland.

The Lions will be without Calvin Johnson for tonight’s preseason opener vs. Cleveland.

Lions head coach Jim Caldwell has been good about resting his veteran players throughout training camp and that includes monitoring Johnson’s reps.

The All-Pro receiver is coming off both knee and finger surgeries this offseason and the Lions don’t want to put him in harm’s way in a game that means nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Also out for the Lions are defensive end Ziggy Ansah and receiver TJ Jones, who remain on the PUP list.

Kris Durham will start at receiver in place of Johnson and second-year defensive end Devin Taylor will start in place of Ansah.

There was some speculation as to whether first-round draft pick Eric Ebron would play tonight or not after missing two days of practice this week with an undisclosed injury, but he is active and should play.
