Lions' ground game still taking shape

Posted Aug 16, 2011

Looking ahead to Friday's game at Cleveland, the Lions' running game could be considered atypical.

It was intended that rookie tailback Mikel Leshoure have a significant role this season and his absence has left a void. Veteran Maurice Morris - a player who performed well throughout Jahvid Best's injury troubles last year - is out with a broken hand.

That leaves Best - the starter - Ian Johnson, Aaron Brown and Detroit's newest free agent signings at the position: Mike Bell and Jerome Harrison.

"Both of those guys - Bell and Harrison - were behind physically," said Head Coach Jim Schwartz after Tuesday's practice. "They couldn't help but be. Football shape is football shape. Those guys hadn't been in camps at that point."

Both tailbacks are working overtime to learn the scheme, take mental reps and get into shape physically.

“The offense is coming to me slowly, but surely," said Bell. "I’ve learned a lot of different offenses, so I’ve almost got to re-teach myself and just replace the terminology with different things. It’s coming along pretty well."

Both Schwartz and Offensive Coordinator Scott Linehan are emphasizing that it is too early to rush to judgment regarding the Lions run game.

Between personnel changes and the single-high, man-to-man coverage the Bengals were showing the first-team offense on Friday, Detroit didn't turn in a running performance for the ages.

"We tried to get (Jerome Harrison) some carries and some of those carries were into looks that he didn't really have a chance," said Schwartz.

Linehan knows the Lions' offensive strengths have been in the passing game.

"Lets put it this way: hopefully if I'm doing the right thing, we will take what the defense gives (us)," said Linehan. "If it's throwing the ball to move and score and be efficient doing that, we will do that. If they are going to double our wideouts, give us really favorable boxes, we'll run it. It'll all even out in the end."

Perhaps the Lions will get a better glimpse of their new veteran runners. Schwartz talked a little about Harrison after Tuesday's practice.

"Hopefully we get to see him in some better situations when we get to Cleveland and get it going," he said. "But he's a veteran player who knows what he's doing. It didn't take him long to catch up scheme-wise."
