Lions Tackle Childhood Obesity

Posted Sep 30, 2009

On September 29th the Detroit Lions teamed up with the American Heart Association and Detroit Public Television to co-host a Youth Fitness Forum located at the Detroit Public Television studios. The event was in association with the NFL’s “Play 60” campaign that challenges children to get at least 60 minutes of activity each day. The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, founded by the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation also participated.

Youths and parents were treated to a fun yet educational evening beginning with a meet and greet with some of the Detroit Lions, followed by the forum. The forum, part of the EmpowerME Movement, was moderated by Sandy Kovach from Smooth Jazz V98.1 and WOMC and included a panel of young adults that have been involved in and care about improving the activity level of their generation. The youth panel included: Austin Miller, 12, Sam Miller, 10, Robert Hsu, 16, Taylor Esther, 14, Dior Mathis, 17 Malcolm Roberson, 14, and Joseph Duprey, 10.

The panel and audience members, that was composed of kids, teens, and adults from all over metro Detroit, discussed the importance of exercise, eating right, and living healthy lives. They even got up and moving and learned a few different exercises that they could do at home through the program’s fitness drills. Players Darnell Bing, Jordon Dizon, Jerome Felton, and Drew Stanton, along with Lion’s mascot Roary, participated in the forum by discussing what being healthy means to them as well as performing the fitness drills alongside the forum’s attendees. Detroit Public Television recorded the event for future playback and educational opportunities.

The empowerME Movement is the Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s strategy to engage kids across the country to take charge of their health, get educated and get activated. Any young person can go online and make a commitment to healthy living at empowerME2b.org where they can share their stories and find resources to help them have a positive impact on their own communities.

To go along with the forum and the push for a heartier generation, Calvin Johnson recorded three vignettes on fitness with the forum panelists earlier in the day. These vignettes will appear on DPTV in the near future. Go to dptvkids.org for exercises, recipes and tips for healthy living for kids.
