Allen Park, Mich. — Former Lions head athletic trainer Dean Kleinschmidt will be honored as the 2014 Ricky Sandoval Award recipient at the 21st Annual Detroit Lions Courage House Dinner on Tuesday, October 28 at Ford Field.

The Ricky Sandoval Award recognizes individuals that have made contributions both in sports and in the community. The award is named in honor of the late Lions’ director of security who lost his battle with pancreatic cancer in 2009.

Kleinschmidt was an athletic trainer for 41 years in the NFL including 8 with the Detroit Lions. During his career Kleinschmidt served on the board of directors and as president of the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society (PFATS) and on two NFL advisory committees.

He was instrumental in establishing Courage Houses in NFL cities and elevating the Ed Block Courage Award Foundation to a national level.  The national Ed Block Courage Award Dinner features the NFL recipients from all 32 teams and is named in honor of the late Ed Block, former athletic trainer for the Baltimore Colts, who devoted much of his time and money helping abused children.

The Ed Block Courage Award will be presented to Lions’ wide receiver Calvin Johnson.  The Award recognizes a Lions’ player who exemplifies sportsmanship and who has overcome injury and/or adversity to excel on the field.

The 21st annual Detroit Lions Courage House Dinner will also feature Detroit Lions Head Coach Jim Caldwell as guest speaker. The dinner annually benefits HAVEN, Oakland County’s premier center for the prevention and treatment of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse. Proceeds will target child abuse prevention and treatment programs. Previous banquets have raised approximately $2 million for HAVEN.
