Cunningham says Suh is playing more physical than he did a year ago

Posted Oct 28, 2011

To the untrained eye, defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh may not be having as good a season as he did a year ago.

As a rookie, Suh started all 16 games, finishing with 10.0 sacks and 66 tackles (50 solo). Through seven games this season, Suh has 3.0 sacks and 22 tackles (15 solo).

But Defensive Coordinator Gunther Cunningham says that looks can be deceiving.

"He is playing some kind of football and if anybody wants to deny that than they don't know what the hell they're talking about and probably never will," he said.

The tendency to take a quick look at statisics in order to evaluate a player is all too easy and Cunningham says he can find loopholes in just about every stat thrown out there.

"You can’t measure everything on a statistical thing like a sack," he said.

Suh is making an impact, but teams are also scheming specifically to take him away, opening things up for his teammates.

"We’ve played some pretty good teams," said Cunningham. "People throw on three-step drops everytime I turn around.

"(Suh has) been very productive and very explosive. He’s probably playing more physical this year than he ever did last year."
