Ameer Abdullah blog: Detroit community has helped me grow

Posted Dec 17, 2015

Running back Ameer Abdullah blogs about volunteering in the Detroit community and how it has helped him grow.

This Tuesday I attended the Warrick Dunn Charities' Homes for the Holidays program with the Lions. I was just excited to be a part of it. I loved sharing that moment and having the opportunity to meet such a humble and well-deserving family. To see them have their lives change in the matter of an hour, it’s really special to me. It was really good and something I’ll always remember.

I feel like the Detroit community has helped me grow a lot as a young man. To see some of the struggles that the city has gone through and to see how hard they’re fighting to get up out of that struggle is encouraging. It helps you put this in perspective, to stay grounded and stay humble.

As an athlete in the community, I can help by being present and being a voice. I may not always understand fully what they’re going through, but I can still be there to lend a helping hand and show that there is a human side of me.

It’s the greatest feeling really. I feel like wherever this career takes me, I always want to give back to the community in some form or fashion. It may not always be Homes for the Holidays, but you just get a really warm feeling when you’re helping out in the community in any way. It’s something I’m really learning and embracing here in Detroit.
